A defined progression with six stages. Every resident enters where they fit and advances at their own pace through measurable milestones — a plan a family can understand, a funder can support, and the organization can measure.
Crucially, the Pathway is not a one-way escalator. Some residents move through every stage; others find their fullest, happiest life at an earlier one, and that is a success too. The model bends to the person, not the person to the model.
Each value is meant to be a test we can fail, and therefore a standard we can be held to.
We measure success by how much capacity a person gains, not how much care they consume.
We treat every resident as an adult with a full life — not a diagnosis, a case number, or a charity object.
Residents have a say in where they live, with whom, how they spend their days, and what goals they pursue.
We build housing woven into ordinary neighborhoods and lives, not segregated from them.
We hold the conviction — and intend to prove — that far more adults with developmental disabilities can work, and want to, than current systems assume.
Physical safety, emotional safety, and security of tenure are non-negotiable.
We measure our outcomes, publish what we learn, and answer for our results to residents, families, funders, and the field.
Carma's Place is built on integrated, apartment-style housing in ordinary communities rather than congregate group homes or institutions. This reflects both our values and the evidence: people with developmental disabilities live healthier, more connected, more self-determined lives when they are part of a community rather than walled off from it.
It also aligns with decades of federal policy favoring community-based settings, which keeps our model eligible for the housing and Medicaid funding streams on which sustainability depends.
From the first location, Carma's Place runs on a unified operating system — for resident case management, individualized goal tracking, employment outcomes, volunteer coordination, donor management, and grant compliance — rather than the patchwork of spreadsheets and disconnected tools most nonprofits accumulate over years.
Because every future location runs on the same platform, Carma's Place can compare outcomes across communities, identify what works, and improve the model continuously — giving funders real, comparable, longitudinal evidence of impact.
Credible efforts already exist in this field, and their success is evidence the need is real and that serious capital will back a serious model.
